Waterloo Region Courthouse
Waterloo Regional Courthouse is a brand new multi-storey facility featuring natural finishes and open views of the surrounding landscape.
Taking cues from the architect’s vision of accessible services in a natural setting, Forge developed an attractive wayfinding system that guides users, without distracting them from their surroundings. Our designers drew inspiration from the nearby Elora Gorge conservation area, imbuing the courthouse with a sense of serenity, selecting natural materials that would complement, instead of compete. The natural sediment layers of the gorge were put to use as a visual metaphor for level identification. Curved signage located throughout the main lobby highlights the lobby’s softly curving walls, while smoked acrylic and natural wood signage located outside each courtroom subtly illuminates to indicate when court is in session.
Our carefully-tuned details establish a deep connection between the functionality of the wayfinding solution and the beauty of the overall space. The result is an unconventional courthouse where the signage is an extension of the architecture and a reflection of nature, infusing the environment with warmth and reassurance.
